A Little Something Special

Equipment to tickle the fancy of the audio connoisseur - By LARRY MYERS - Off Duty / Europe / January 1976
.

Intro for : "TAKE A LOOK AT a real audio buffs ......"

TAKE A LOOK AT a real audio buffs hi-fi system and it's almost a sure bet that you'll find one or more special components. Separate pre and power amplifiers are the most common special components you are likely to encounter, but there are plenty of others available.

Noise reduction units, equalizers (often incorporated with a preamp), quadraphonic adapters, microphone mixers, switching units and reverbs also are in the "special" category. Regardless of their function, special components contribute to the fidelity and/or flexibility of an audio system.

.

(1) Preamplifiers.

All preamps, whether part of a receiver, integrated amplifier or as a separate unit, serve to amplify the signal from a source such as a turntable or tape deck to a level sufficient to drive a power amplifier. However, separate preamps generally offer flexibility and performance superior to those integrated with other components.

For example, the preamps listed here usually offer inputs for a large number of sources, a full range of sophisticated controls, such as multiple tone controls with selectable turn-over points for greater ease in tailoring the sound to your liking, VU meters, as well as superior electrical specifications, especially as regards noise, distortion and frequency response.
.

(2) Power amplifiers.

Like preamps, power amps may be incorporated in receivers or integrated amplifiers or may be separate units. The power amp's job is to boost the signal from the preamp to a level that will drive your speakers. The primary factor that distinguishes separate power amplifiers from those just mentioned is power, lots of it. While 100-watt per-channel receivers are available, if you are really shooting for big stuff, like 250 watts, you'll need a separate power amp.

Of course, power isn't the only thing these amps offer. Distortion and noise are usually quite low, frequency response wide, and the amount of reserve
power for musical peaks is substantial. Then, too, meters or other output indicators are also offered.
.

(3) Equalizers.

Even the advanced tone controls on separate preamplifiers are not enough to suit some audiophiles. For them an equalizer, which divides the audio spectrum into five or more frequency bands (as opposed to the two or three on most preamps) is the ultimate. Equalizers are incorporated into some preamps, but they are also available separately, and can be connected between your preamp and power amp, or even used with many receivers.

Describing an equalizer as a special kind of tone control may be a bit misleading. Rather than using equalizers for making gross changes in overall response, many audiophiles use them for subtle refinements in order to get a uniform or "flat" frequency response, given the characteristics of their system and room. Once the equalizer is adjusted in this way, the preamp's tone controls can be used to make temporary changes. For example, if a particular record has overly-strong high-frequency emphasis, the preamp can be adjusted to compensate for it without permanently altering the system's overall response.
.

(4) Noise Reduction.

Short of sending the kids out to play, the B Type Dolby system is without a doubt the most popular noise reduction method around today. Often incorporated in cassette decks and open-reel recorders, Dolby is being used in more and more receivers and tuners of late, largely due to the increased use of Dolby by FM radio stations Stateside. You can, of course, add a separate ("outboard") Dolby unit to your present equipment instead of buying new Dolby-equipped components.

Separate Dolby units usually have easily adjustable calibration provisions, including built-in meters, which you won't find elsewhere. And, of course, you can use a separate Dolby unit with more than one piece of equipment, say a cassette deck, open-reel recorder and also a tuner. (Note that Dolbyized FM broadcasts use a different pre-emphasis than do regular FM broadcasts. Therefore, for proper reception you will need an inexpensive adapter that converts your tuner from the standard 75 to the 25 microsecond de-emphasis needed for best results.)

You will find two types of outboard Dolby units, those that offer separate recording and playback circuits and those that do not. The latter require you to do more plugging and unplugging of cables than the former, but the cost is less and the overall effect —less noise —is the same. There are other noise reduction systems on the market; JVC has built into their cassette decks their own ANRS system which is compatible to prerecorded Dolbyized tapes. Another is the dbx system which reduces noise and can expand dynamic range. There will soon be pre-recorded dbx records and tapes but the Dolby system remains the market leader for general audiophiles yearning for tapes and FM transmissions that are free of background hiss.
.

(5) 4-channel adapters.

We've all heard a lot about 4-channel but many people, particularly those with a large investment in stereo gear, are hesitant to make the switch. However, these are a number of 4-channel adapters on the market that allow you to go quad with little additional investment.

The simplest, and cheapest, approach is the speaker matrix. These devices, which don't require additional amplifiers, recover out-of-phase rear channel information, present to some degree in all recordings. Next come matrix decoders for QS and SQ. Available in varying degrees of complexity, they provide true four-channel sound.

The more elaborate have sophisticated logic circuits and will synthesize reasonable 4-channel from stereo sources. And, there are also CD-4 demodulators for recovering the rear channel information on CD-4 discs. With the exception of the speaker matrix approach, you'll need rear channel amplifers, too, which are incorporated in some units. Of course, it should be obvious that you'll need four speakers, too.

And so on. There are a number of other special components available, including: reverberation systems that simulate the effect of being in a larger listening room; control centers, for switching various equipment inputs and outputs; special adjustable crossover systems, for use with bi or tri-amplified speaker systems; and, audio test units for checking and adjusting your system.
