.

'The Back Page' is a monthly OFF DUTY editorial feature
.

  1. The London Audio Fair (Oct. 28-Nov. 3), offered only a few new-product surprises since most manufacturers had already previewed their 1975 lines at Chicago's giant CES (see Off Duty's report in the Aug.-Sept.-Oct. issues). But here are some late entries:
  2. JVC joins the trend to super-stereo with the JM-S1000 power amplifier, styled for rack-mounting and rated at 180 watts per channel into 8 ohms (20-20,000 Hz, both channels driven) with rated distortion less than 0.08 per cent.
  3. Also rack-mounted are two new 4-channel components from JVC, model JP-V1000 preamp and CD4-1000 demodulator. The preamplifier features the 7-band tone controls that JVC calls S.E.A. No matrix circuitry is built in. Instead, there are two sets of jacks for connecting separate SQ, and QS decoders.
  4. The trend to front-loading, component-styled cassette equipment is further strengthened by the introduction of JVC's model CD-1950E, but it differs from the norm in that JVC opts for its own noise reduction system, A.N.R.S., instead of the nearly universal Dolby system. The JVC system is similar and, according to the manufacturer, compatible with Dolby circuitry and it's cheaper, since JVC, by utilizing its own system, saves the cost of the license fee paid to Dolby by other manufacturers.
  5. Sansui now offers a separate Vario-Matrix decoder/synthesizer, model QSD-1. It, too, is styled for mounting in control room rack frames, matching the 4-channel encoder Sansui offers to radio stations.
  6. Sansui has a new series of loudspeakers produced in Europe and some of them may soon be available in audio clubs. They are the ES30, ES50, ES100 and ES200. The ES50 is a reflex type, while the others are air suspension designs. The "ES" stands for European Speaker.
  7. Danish cartridge maker Ortofon is into loudspeakers for the first time, the initial entry a two-driver system with 10-in. woofer and dome tweeter, model 225. The woofer is damped by means of a vent packed with acoustically resistant material, making the system a cross between an acoustic suspension (sealed) type and a reflex system. If this reminds you of Dynaeo's speaker systems, you1re right. Dynaco's retired founder, David Hafler, is now part-owner and a director of Ortofon.
  8. Garrard has introduced a moderate-priced single-play turntable, model 86SB, with four-pole synchronous motor and belt drive, teak base and hinged dust cover.

  9. When the EES Mail Order Catalog was issued last summer, audio and photo items were conspicuously absent but a special note promised a separate audio/photo catalog later. Now the catalog is on the way, and it contains the same mail order selection offered in the Far East by the Pacific Exchange System (PACEX). Because the audio and photo goodies are still in Japan, warehoused at Tachikawa Air Base near Tokyo, prices in the catalog are attractively low -- none of the freight and handling charges incurred in bringing merchandise to Europe are included. If you order by mail from Japan, you must give a Stateside address and pay postage to the States. Orders for shipment to European APO address wonTt be accepted, according to Headquarters AAFES in Dallas.

  10. The Navy Exchange in Yokosuka, Japan has extended its mail order service to Europe, circulating copies of the NEX catalog to the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Merchandise can be shipped directly from Japan to FPO shipboard addresses. Shore-based personnel may also order, but only in person through a Navy Exchange, which effectively limits the NEX service in Europe to Navy bases in England, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Greece and other points in the Mediterranean. Yokosuka prices are identical to PACEX prices for the same merchandise.

  11. Among the Special Components available from the NEX catalog are the
  12. Sony TA-3200F stereo power amp for $233.00,
  13. Sansui QS-500 4-channel decoder/rear-channel amp for $94.50 and
  14. new CD-4 demodulators Technics SH-400 for $112.00 and
  15. JVC 4DD-5 for $103.00.
  16. If youTre looking for a reverb there's both the Sansui RA-500 for $71.50 and the Pioneer SR-202W for $64.50.
  17. Noise reduction units include the Teac AN-60W for $67.00 and the Teac AN-l80 for $195.00.
  18. The JVC SEA-10 equalizer is available for $69.50. For descriptions of the above models see our Special Components Shopper.

February 1975 - Das Editorial von Walter Rios

'The Back Page' is a monthly OFF DUTY editorial feature
.

  1. Goodbye ALEX and goodbye EES. Throughout this issue, you'll find a new name for the European Exchange System (EES). PXs and BXs of the worldwide Army and Air Force Exchange System (AAFES) are adopting one name (AAFES), with a regional designation. EES is now AAFES, Europe. Its Far East counterpart, which maybe you knew in Vietnam as PACEX, is now AAFES, Pacific. Sad to say, ALEX (Alaskan Exchange System) must lose its human touch and become AAFES, Alaska.
For the next few months, until the wreckers of progress have pulled down the last old snackbar sign and hauled away the last old malted milk paper cup, you'll still see EES around. And until we're all reprogrammed, Off Duty will continue to remind you that AAFES, Europe is what's happened to EES.
  2. The Ramstein Audio Photo Club will have a sale for many hi-fi components, as well as some photo items, during the entire month of February. All items will be in operating condition, but prices will be reduced to cost or below. And watch for the big Audio-Photo Show which the Ramstein Audio Photo Club will have in mid-March.
  3. Lecson Pre-Amp AC1 and Power-Amp API are now available in audio clubs. The Pre-amp has a new, low-profile design. Standard Service is the rep.
  4. The new Bose Model 301 direct-reflecting loudspeaker system will soon be available in audio clubs. The 301s are a bookshelf system and will retail in the clubs for under $100 each. Coming soon to AAFES, Europe Sound Centers will be the Bose Model 901 Continental loudspeaker system. Expected retail price is just over $400 per pair.
  5. Another "Top Pop Shop" (das ist ein Plattenladen fürs Militär) is being opened by the W. D. Warren Co. this month. This one is located in Bitburg at Saarstrasse 15. Top Pop Shops are open only to holders of valid U.S. military ID cards. These shops carry a complete line of popular and classical LPs (including 4-channel), cassettes and accessories at attractive prices.
  6. The Warren Co. has eight other Top Pop Shops already in operation in Buchschlag, Augsburg, Baumholder, Fiirth, Kaisers-lautern, Ludwigsburg, Mannheim and Wiesbaden.

March 1975 - Das Editorial von Walter Rios

'The Back Page' is a monthly OFF DUTY editorial feature
.

  1. The Ramstein Audio-Photo Club will have an audio equipment show at the Ramstein Air Base Recreation Center on Saturday and Sunday, March 15 and 16 (1975). The hours will be 12:00-20:00 hours on Saturday and 12:00-18:00 hours on Sunday.
  2. The Armed Forces Recreation Center has announced a new program at the Garmisch Recreation Area for the six and under set - a ski kindergarten. The program is designed for children from two to six and will be conducted on the Holiday Hill ski slope daily except Wednesdays. Other activities of the program include sledding, nature walks and games. Cost of the kindergarten is $5 per day which includes lunch and a snack.
  3. Olympus cameras and lenses are available again in the photo clubs after an absence of several months. Leonard Taylor is the rep.
  4. The price of $400 listed by Brandex for Bose 901 Continental loudspeakers and quoted by us in the February 1975 Back Page was incorrect. Bose 901 Continental speakers sell for just over $500 per pair.
  5. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will soon end its "grace period" for manufacturers' compliance with the FTC's new ruling on amplifier output ratings. While the FTC ruling may be a temporary headache for manufacturers and their advertising agencies who must update product information to comply with the ruling, it will make things easier for the consumer. Confusing terms such as "music power", "instant peak power" and "instant music power" will be replaced by continuous (rms) power.

  1. Quiet, Noise Reduction. More than 60 Stateside FM stations are now broadcasting in Dolby, lead by Ohio with eight such stations. More are expected to follow. You can, of course, receive Dolby FM transmissions with ordinary equipment, but special Dolby circuitry is needed if you are to take full advantage of the noise-reducing process.
  2. RCA has just launched a quadraphonic CD-4 record and tape club, mailing brochures to some 200,000 prospects. CBS and JVC are also active in the 4-channel recording field. And, on the broadcast side, some 40 stations are now transmitting matrix-encoded quadraphonic signals.
  3. Inflation-fighting. Customers who place special orders with AAFES now are protected from inflation by a new plan which limits price increases to 10 per cent, mainly on American-made items. AAFES itself will pay for increases above the 10 per cent level. Again, not all items are covered, so ask beforehand.
  4. Show and Tell Department. Telefunken's new video disc player is now available on the economy in many West German audio stores. When connected to the proper television receiver, the video disc player lets you watch and listen to your favorite entertainment. Video disc subjects already include soccer highlights, Laurel and Hardy comedy, classical music and kiddy shows. You just slip the discs - which sell for about $10.00 - into the player and press a button.
  5. Consumerism Clout. Following on the heels of the new FTC amplifier power output specification regulations, Congress has recently passed another bill to help the consumer. The bill makes it possible for you to sue a manufacturer over warranty promises with the Federal Trade Commission setting the guidelines.
  6. AAFES, Europe has announced price decreases on 23 items listed in the 1975 PACEX Mail Order Catalog and price increases on ten items. If yourve already ordered an item that has dropped in price, PACEX will refund the difference. If the price has increased, you will be notified of the additional charge.
  7. The new Tempest Lab Series loudspeakers, which all feature the Heil air-motion tweeter, are now available in audio clubs. These high-efficiency units require considerably less power than most conventional bookshelf speakers, the manufacturer says. The Lab-1, with 12-inch woofer, goes for $169.00; the Lab-2, with 10-inch woofer, for $1^3.00; and a pair of Lab-3s, with 8-inch woofers, sells for $218.00
  8. Home movie makers who send their super-8 film to Kodak Processing Laboratories will now receive their film on a new, improved reel that can be threaded with the film trailer either unanchored or anchored to the reel. Film will be returned unanchored, but instructions for attaching it to the reel for use with automatic rewind projectors will be included.
  9. Dual's CS-701 direct-drive turntable is now available at all audio clubs. Base and dust cover are included with all 701s but you can opt for a model with or without the Shure V15 Type III pickup cartridge. The Dual CS-601, which uses a low-speed motor and belt drive, is available from AAFES, Europe audio outlets.
  10. 5-channel Sound? The movie version of the rock opera "Tommy" will be presented in 5-channel sound. The system, a Sansui development, places speakers in each corner of the theater and also behind the movie projection screen. More than 40 Stateside movie houses are being equipped with the system which also uses JBL and Cerwin-Vega components.

  1. Now that you have read all about those new audio marvels introduced at the Summer 1975 CES (see the concluding report in this issue and part one in the August Off Duty), you're probably wondering when some of these goodies will be available in the military market.
  2. Pioneer is already stocking its SA-9900 integrated amp in the clubs. Selling price is around $448. Pioneer's top-of-the-line front loading cassette deck, CT-F9191, will be available in AAFES, Europe in Oct. for about $280.
  3. The Sansui LM-330 loudspeaker is in AAFES for $87.50 while the LM-220 and LM-110 speakers are available in the clubs for about $85 and $74 respectively. 4. East meets West on Sept. 12 to 16 when the Patrick Henry Village Officers' Club in Heidelberg holds an oriental rug sale. It's billed as the largest of its kind ever presented to Americans in Europe. You will be able to choose carpets from China, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Romania and Afghanistan.
  5. In Here and Now this month you'll find many German wine festivals. Here's one more: the Vintagers Fest to be held in Mainz-Hechtsheim on Sept. 19 through 21 1975. Starting with a wine tasting at 7 p.m., Sept. 19 at the community center, the next couple of days will include concerts, dancing and a fun fair. There will also be guided tours (Sept.15-18) through the Hechtsheim vineyards. Local winegrowers will conduct these tours, so they will almost certainly speak genuine Mainz-Hechtsheimer-German. But language should be no barrier to fun at the rest of the festival.
  6. Speaking of television (see our shopper on p. 65). Look for digital TV tuning to take over, with Magnavox's Star an early leader. There will be calculator-like keyboards and the ability to pre-program for a whole week's viewing. Memory circuits will even remember if you need fine tuning and so on. Expect this feature to add $15 to the cost of a set.
  7. So sorry. In the July magnetic tape shopper we failed to mention that Scotch has a line of chromium dioxide cassettes availabae in the audio clubs. These are the S-C-60Cr, S-C-90Cr and the S-C-120Cr.

  3. BASF has a longitudinal video recorder (LVR) with 1/4" wide tape in an 8 1/2 ounce cartridge with a 2 hour play time on 28 tracks. The system plays across, rewinds, plays again — 28 times! Expected recorder price is $1,000 with the cartridge costing $26.
  4. Then there is the "IIT" (Illinois Institute of Technology)'s longitudinal recorder. More like 8-track and thus not reversible, the system has 40 tracks and slips from one to another. "IIT" sees the recorder selling for $300 ($400 for color) and a 30-min. cartridge costing $10.
  5. Telephone answering devices, another high technology offshoot of the electronics business, are moving closer to widespread consumer use. One snag has been AT&T's insistence on a special coupler. It's worried over schlock brands messing up connections for blocks of homes. AT&T's couplers cost $35 and fees are $3.50 a month. The answerer boom caught telephone users in Connecticut, Utah and California red-eared. These states cannot allow Bell's Authorized Protective Connecting Module (APCM), now built-in by Record-A-Call, so you must still pay the phone company and use its coupler.
  6. Considering the small fortunes you can invest in hi-fi these days, maybe GE's idea of a $1.50 diamond-tipped scripting pen to identify your goods isn't such a bad idea. For more information get in touch with GE's Tube Division at 3800 North Milwaukee, Chicago, Ill. 60641.
  7. As with citizen's band radio, calculators, digital watches or anything hot in consumer electronics, new brands crowd in. Consider the big screen TV boomlet. Most recent in the race to grab TV projection is TeVeCine, developed by inventor Charles Weiss and sells stateside for over $50, using a tripod system in front of your inverted TV set. Look for much more action from other manufacturers.
  8. Advent claims to have sold over 2,000 of its VideoBeam giant 4 1/4 by 5 2/3 foot screen system at $2,795 a pop.
  9. Sony's KP-4000 with a 40 inch screen and 25 foot remote control handling is $2,500. Muntz has a 30 by 40 inch system selling for $1,995.
  10. Five U.S. TV organizations are pushing for better UHF quality. The goal is a reduction to 10 decibels from the currently surveyed 17.9 dB. By comparison European UHF tuners are 9 dB. Set makers, of course, are arguing over the estimated $9 added cost for tuner quieting parts. The Council for UHF Broadcasting is asking for still another improvement — that when a VHF antenna is attached a comparable UHF antenna also be put on.
  11. AM stereo on the way? RCA is jumping into AM multiplex asking the industry associations for an ad hoc committee, i.e. like the one that's already examining quad FM. AM multiplex will allow for quad matrix broadcasting (but ironically, not RCA's discrete quad). Meanwhile stations trying AM stereo (Maryland, Florida and California) require two radios.

  1. Exchange mail order catalogs are a major shopping aid for most military personnel overseas. With the recent publication of new editions, we've decided to review them briefly.
  2. The AAFES, Europe, catalog contains more than 200 pages featuring goods from throughout Europe. There is Danish wooden ware, Italian carvings, English bone china and Spanish porcelain, for example. The 300 plus-page AAFES, Pacific (PACEX), catalog has merchandise from several Asian nations. There is Thai silk, Korean bronzeware, plus woodcraft from Taiwan and the Phillipines.
  3. The similar-sized NEX catalog has many Asian-made items in common with PACEX. However, some NEX products are not available from PACEX, such as black-and-pink coral jewelry, luggage, pens, typewriters and U.S.-made kitchen appliances, among others.
  4. Looking at hi-fi, AAFES, Europe, has but four items, all turntables. NEX and PACEX both devote about 50 pages to electronics. NEX has a slight lead over PACEX in receivers, 28 to 23, and offers 16 turntables to PACEX*s 11. But nearly an identical selection of equipment is offered in most other categories. One reason for this is that PACEX and NEX now combine most of their buying. Speakers, however, are an exception, with NEX boasting several U.S. brands including AR, Bose and JBL.
  5. Focusing on photo equipment, AAFES, Europe, has the smallest selection of cameras but makes up for it with more enlargers, processing kits and the like. PACEX offers a large camera lineup but NEX is clearly the leader here. It has everything from pocket cameras to large format models. NEX has the most projectors, too. All three catalogs contain comprehensive electronic flash selections.
  6. There was a bit of confusion in last month's speaker Shopper involving Epicure, EPI and MicroTower products. AAFES, Europe, carries the EPI Model 90 and Model 110, at $55 and $72,respectively. The MicroTower MT 1, at $37, and MT 2 at $74, are also stocked by the exchange.
  7. Audio clubs in Europe stock the Epicure loudspeaker line. The Epicure 100 is available for about $67, the Epicure 10, $86, the Epicure 11, $108, the Epicure 202, $156, the Epicure 20, $185, the Epicure 400, $288, and the Epicure 1000, $715.
  8. The new KLH Research 10 loudspeaker line, which features the Sumarium Cobalt DVR tweeter, is now on sale at audio clubs. Prices range from $70-300. These special military prices are the lowest available anywhere, according to KLH.
  9. The Dual CS-701 direct-drive turntable is in stock at AAFES, Europe, Sound Centers. The CS-701 is available complete with a Shure V-15 Type III cartridge. By the way, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the Dual firm, headquartered in St.Georgen, West Germany.
