Erläuterungen zu diesen US-AUDIO Seiten der 1950er Jahre

Die hier stehenden amerikanischen Artikel aus 1959 (aus der US-AUDIO) sind teilweise sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig, weil sie erstens aus einer längst vergangenen Zeit stammen und zweitens, weil dort in den USA ganz "anders" gedacht wurde als bei uns in Old Germany oder in Europa.

Vergleichbar mit unseren deutschen Hifi-Magazinen etwa ab 1962 ist jedoch, daß auch diese Zeitschrift ihre Anzeigen- Kunden und -Leser (be- oder ab- ?) werben mußte. - Weiterhin sind die Dimensionen des amerikanischen Kontinents mit den unseren hier in Europa nicht vergleichbar. - Ein Redaktions-"Trip" von New York nach Los Angeles oder Chicago oder gar in die Wüste nach Las-Vegas zu einer der CES- Audio- "Shows" war - auch mit dem Flugzeug - immer noch eine Weltreise. Und jede Ausstellung oder "Messe" wurde als "Show" deklariert. Und natürlich, in USA musste alles "Show" sein, um beim Publikum einige Aufmerksamkeit zu erzeugen.

Was wußten die Hifi-Begeisterten und die Fachleute in 1959 ?

Damals wie auch Heute wurden neue Erkenntnisse relativ schnell veröffentlicht. In der US-AUDIO 1959 erschienen sporadische Listen von neuen Büchern, Heften und sonstigen Blättern, mal von den Verlagen, mal von den Herstellern. Nicht alle Ankündigungen waren Hifi- oder Stereo- bezogen, aber der US-AUDIO-Verlag brauchte auch interessante Neuigkeiten für seine Leser.

  • • Newark Electric Company, 223W. Madison St., Chicago 6, Ill., is now distributing its 1959 catalog No. 69.   • • CBS-Hytron Advertising" Service, Parker St., Newburyport, Mass., is now distributing "An Introduction to Stereophonic-Sound," the first of a series of "Stereo-Talk" bulletins, which tells what stereo is and how it works. The four-page publication describes how a stereo record is produced using the 45/45 Westrex system, and illustrates how the playback stylus motion is converted into separate signals for each channel.   • • Argos Products Company, Genoa, 111., announces Catalog No. C-58, a complete listing of the company's wall and corner baffles and high-fidelity speaker enclosures. This is an excellent publication for custom builders, irrespective of whether their work involves commercial installations or equipment for the home.   • • Commercial Engineering Department, RCA Electronic Tube Division, Harrison, X.J., has just issued a colorful 137-page book, the "Designer's Guide" to Preferred Tube Types, covering entertainment receiving tubes. Format of the handsomely-bound volume presents technical data in easy-to-read fashion. Color is widely used throughout the book to enhance readability and to highlight graphs and curves. Specially prepared for the men who design high-fidelity audio equipment, phonographs, radio receivers and TV sets, the book contains tube characteristics, dimensions, and base diagrams. Incorporated in the booklet is a composite listing, arranged numerically, of lamps manufactured by Chicago Miniature Lamp Works, General Electric, National Carbon, Oxford Components, Radio Corporation of America, Raytheon, Tung-Sol and Westinghouse.   • • Alpha Wire Corporation, 200 Varick St., New York 14, N. Y. is now offering free a wire-stranding chart, designated ZK-4, which makes it possible to determine rapidly the available stranding combinations for various sizes of conductor wire. This information is shown on a one-page reference chart which also tells the number of smaller gauge wires necessary to make up the cross-sectional area of a conductor. The chart is free, and will be furnished on request to Alpha Wire Corporation, or in response to the Reader Service Card.
  • • Astron Corporation, 255 Grant Avenue, East Newark, New Jersey, announces the availability of Service Replacement Catalog AC-7 which covers technical data on the company's full line of capacitors and niters for radio, TV, and electronic applications. The illustrated 16-page booklet features a photographic "guided tour" of the Astron plant and explains product production from researching and engineering to testing and quality control. Complete product listings are also shown.
  • Electron Tube Division of "Radio Corporation of America" has just announced the latest edition of the well known RCA Receiving Tube Manual, RC-19. This manual, which is claimed to have sold more than two million copies since 1947 in earlier editions (and we wonder how many more were sold before then, for we remember them much further back than 1947), is the most comprehensive and authoritative book of its type in the industry. The new edition has been revised, expanded, and brought up to date. It contains technical data for more than 625 receiving tubes, including types for black-and-wThite and color television, series-string applications, 12-volt automobile radio receivers, and high fidelity audio, and more than 95 picture tubes including color types. A veritable education in vacuum tubes and their applications, this new manual also covers basic tube theory in the same easy-to-un-derstand style used in previous editions.
    The section on Electron Tube Applications has been expanded to include a description of tone-control circuits for hi-fi audio amplifiers and high-voltage regulator circuits for TV use. Other sections include information on generic tube types, interpretation of tube data, and electron-tube installation.
    The Receiving-Tube Classification Chart has been revised to show the latest tube data, and types designed for series-string applications are specially marked for easy selection. The popular Circuits section at the back of the book shows a, new intercom for three or more stations and several new high-fidelity audio amplifier circuits including preamps for magnetic and ceramic pickups, an audio control unit incorporating both volume and tone controls, and two complete hi-fi amplifiers having outputs of 10 and 35 watts, respectively, and suitable for both monophonic and stereo applications.   • • French Electronic Directory. The second issue of the buyer's guide to the French electronics industry has just come off the press.   • • General Electric Company, Semiconductor Products Department, Charles Building, Liverpool, X.Y., is now publishing a new edition, the fourth, of the "Transistor Manual," which contains 227 pages of information on transistors and their uses in electronic circuits. Included in the 20 chapters is information on basic semiconductor theory, transistor construction techniques, biasing, switching characteristics, transistor servicing techniques, and several articles on circuitry. In addition, the book contains a revised and up-to-date listing of all American JEDEC-registered transistor types with their basic specifications and interchangeability information. The "Transistor Manual," fourth edition, is priced at one dollar.
  • • Allied Radio Corporation, 100 N. Western Ave., Chicago 80, 111., has just published "Understanding Transistors," a 64-page handbook which not only serves as an excellent introduction to transistors, but also as a helpful reference for those already acquainted with the subject. Written by Milton S. Kiver, well-known author of many volumes on electronics, the book opens with a concise discussion of the properties of germanium. Opening sections of the book clarify basic theory and provide a solid foundation for the succeeding chapters. Many transistorized circuits, with a detailed explanation of each, are included. There are more than 50 diagrams and illustrations. Price of "Understanding Transistors" is fifty cents.
  • • CBS Electronics, Danvers, Mass., has available for dealers a new phono cartridge cross-reference chart. It lists both CBS-Ronette and Columbia CD cartridges for exact replacement of more than six million cartridges now in use in the U.S.A., and provides a convenient tabulation of technical specifications. Exact-size silhouettes for each cartridge provide a quick identification of model number, and a handy table illustrates and describes various bracket installations. The 8-page catalog, Bulletin PF-285, is available free to independent service dealers through their distributors.
  • • Radio Shack Corporation, 730 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, Mass., has just announced publication of its annual electronic parts and equipment catalog, "1960 Guide to Electronic Buying." The publication scores a number of firsts for a parts distributor's catalog. It is printed entirely in rotogravure on 8^" x 11" magazine-size paper stock, contains paid display advertising and articles written by leading authorities, and features a handbook for the engineer and the hobbyist. The catalog lists some 40,000 electronic items. Net, as opposed to list, prices are shown. It includes over 100 pages of hi-fi products, and some 200 pages of industrial and service items. Price of the catalog is thirty-five cents postpaid to consumers; it will be mailed free to industrial concerns requesting copies on a company letterhead.
  • • Sylvania Electric Products Inc., 1100 Main St., Buffalo 9, N.Y., has available a new characteristics and replacement guide for semiconductor diodes. Included in the 12-page booklet are complete data on the ratings and electrical characteristics of all Sylvania types as well as a replacement guide to virtually all EIA registered diodes.   • Altec Lansing Corporation, 1515 S. Manchester Ave., Anaheim, Calif., reviews all Altec high fidelity equipment in a new 2-color catalog which will be mailed free of charge. Besides listing equipment the booklet has a number of illustrations of custom monophonic and stereo installations. A special feature is the section which diagrams the proper placement of speakers and other components in a listening room.   • Panoramic Radio Products, Inc., 514 S. Fulton Ave., Mount Vernon, N.Y., discusses frequency response and distortion measurements of amplifiers, speakers and other high fidelity equipment in the latest issue of "The Panoramic Analyzer," a periodic publication devoted to application data. Automatic techniques for testing tape and disc recorders and pickups are described. The issue outlines how tedious point-by-point measurements of audio response and distortion can be avoided by the use of an automatic scanning audiofrequency spectrum analyzer. Methods of measuring harmonic and intermodulation distortion and tracing loudspeaker response are explained in detail.
